La Pastora, a gem from the Costa Rica Tarrazu

webadmin Uncategorized 0 Comments

Costa Rica produces my favourite coffee.  There, I’ve said it. It’s not just about the way it tastes, it’s more about the flexibility that having a bag of this coffee brings.  I drink my coffee black, and I like it naturally sweet with plenty of smooth, sparkly acidity. With no espresso machine at home, (there’s an award winning shop just down the road) I just have a french press and a V60. If I’m drinking alone – it’s the v60, if I’ve got company – it’s the french press.  These two brew methods bring completely different results to the cup, so …

What is that new mail order packaging all about?

webadmin Uncategorized 0 Comments

Those of you that have ordered from our brand spanking new website may be wondering why we use different packaging to send out our coffee by mailorder. Well… there are a few good reasons, and it’s not because we’re really tight! I mean, it’s not just that. 1. Freshly roasted coffee gives off a lot of gas for the first few days after roasting. Naturally processed coffees (the sweet, low grown, Brazilian ones especially) can degas for a week before really settling down. The gas swells the bag and the box bottom bags you may have been used to seeing …

Rwanda coffee is taking the main stage!

webadmin Uncategorized 0 Comments

We’ve been buying Rwanda Coffee since 2013 and it’s been a big part of our offer ever since. The Mudlarks Garden Cafe in Hertford have always served a single origin Rwanda coffee as their main espresso and we’ve proudly searched out some fabulous crops from across the country, before settling on some brilliant farmers in the Kivu district. A 30 member farmers co-op called Inzovu. (That means elephant by the way) Their coffee has been in the cup of excellence in recent years, and they produce consistently brilliant coffee year after year. With such a turbulent recent history in Rwanda, …

And so this is Christmas

…and what have we done? 2016 has been a year where we’ve certainly learnt a lot about ourselves! We’ve closed a shop, We’ve opened a bakery, we’ve had lots of disruption with our mobile business after someone decided to steal one of our carts and our main event transport trailer, we’ve moved into a new factory and secured the funding to increase our roasting capacity fivefold and have learnt plenty to decide what our business is going to look like in the future! We’ve now moved all our baking from Ware to Hoddesdon. The kitchens in ware always had a …

Once upon a time, I used to write to you often – then other things just got in the way…. But I’m back! It’s time to tell you all about life at LULU and all the exciting things we’re up to, and perhaps some other things you might be able to look forward to in the future. Starting with the roastery – we’ve now been back in Ware for a little over four months after moving from our old unit in Hertford into 3 industrial units in waggoners yard, Baldock Street and Infamous locally as the home of the midnight …

The big review of 2015

webadmin Uncategorized 0 Comments

Another year over and a new one just begun… The big review of 2015! It’s that time again… I still remember writing 2014’s review well. It was our first full year of trading in Ware High Street, things had gone really (surprisingly) well and we were looking forward for what the future would bring! It’s fair to say that 2015 has been another year of growth and has provided us with some amazing opportunities which we’re going to take further in 2016 and beyond. But what about 2015? What about all the things we said we’d do? How did we …

I really should write in you more often. A little over two years ago, Jo and I were on holiday in Crete when I had to pull a deal to buy the old blockbuster video building in parliament square in Hertford. There were a number of reasons, but really – my heart just wasn’t in it. The building was a perfect space to roast and retail coffee in, with a fantastic two storey window and a wide spiral staircase down to the basement where the roaster would live. We lived in Ware though, Hertford just wasn’t our town. In an …

New year, new challenges.

I haven’t been chatting much recently, but it’s not because I haven’t got anything to say…. I’ve just been really busy. Mad busy. Busier than I’ve ever been before. Having a 6 month old baby is just the cherry on top! I’ll start with the most exciting news…That we’ve now acquired an industrial unit in Hertford where we can have all of our roasters in one place, a dedicated bean packaging line, a showroom area and offices for our wholesale and machine sales business too. I know it’s Hertford and that’s not very us…But it’s a perfect space for for …

Happy birthday to us!

This Wednesday, we’re a year old. In the last 12 months we’ve opened a high street shop, we’ve grown our wholesale business to more than 120 customers, we’ve trained hundreds of people how to make great coffee, we’ve done direct deals with farmers, where we don’t trade direct we’ve moved to a model where we only sell certified coffees, we’ve restored a 150 year old building, we’ve done deals to be exclusive UK and Ireland distributors for some fantastic industrial products, we’ve had 8 leaks through the ceiling, we’ve trebled our roasting capacity, we’ve expanded into out of town sites, …
